At times, the tone is satirical, and in a few places made me laugh out loud, mostly in the beginning.

Rebecca rated it it dientse ok Nov 06, Dienres Sinclair has brought the era alive. From an historic standpoint the book is important to read but Sinclair’s style made it tough for me. Characters interesting and at times maddening. Open Preview See a Problem? The fact that it is still a good read 73 years later is a testament to Sinclair’s skill as a storyteller.
Lanny Budd, who is blessed with pretty much everything a man could reasonably expect in life, is one of the few who cares to seek the truth instead of sitting back and grossly underestimating Hitler, as most Westerners do. I realize that they had telegrams and took trains – transportation and communication weren’t instantaneous – so perhaps that’s why the rise of fascism seems so matter-of-fact, as if it were just a new government to be bought off.
The events it depicts were still fresh in the memories of the readership of the time. The Germans never believed the Nazi changes could ever happen in a civilized nation. However, there are clouds on the horizon in the form of the rise of the Nazis. Both thrilling and disturbing, and utterly anwendbar to our time. I chose to read it because I want to read all the Pulitzer Fiction award winners and this book was next in line. The beginning is very tedious no it takes forever to get going.
The novel was able to capture the building tension in Europe starting with the emergence of Hitler’s public life scene and culminating with his consolidation of all pol I had very low expectations upron this novel.
Or can I just pick up anywhere? Here are some examples. This period deals with the emergence of Hitler on the German scene and the escalation of his power mania as it were. As her creator, he owes her more.
An loe portion of the book focused on the frivolity of the upper class lifestyle. It was published in while World War 2 was raging and the outcome was still in doubt.
